Many people shop differently in the coronavirus pandemic. The pharmacy company dm also realizes this and reacts. The consequences for the branch network are possible.
Karlsruhe (dpa) – Less frequent but more extensive shopping, less in the city and in train stations, more in shopping parks. Pharmacy company dm is also feeling the changes in the shopping behavior of many people during the coronavirus pandemic.
It is open whether there will be consequences for the branch network, dm chief Christoph Werner said Thursday at the presentation of the annual figures in Karlsruhe. Customers’ needs could “in the future possibly also be satisfied with less stationary branches.”
In city centers, in shopping malls, and in train stations, the number of customers is less than before the pandemic. “That shows clearly.” Corona is accelerating a trend that existed before. One thing is clear: “You have to be where the customers are.” The company responded to the pandemic by expanding its online business and express pickup service.
The Karlsruhe-based German pharmacy industry leader continued to grow in the Corona period. However, sales growth in fiscal 2019/20 (September 30) was significantly lower than in the previous year (4.6 percent) by 2.9 percent to € 11.52 billion. . At 5.3 percent, growth abroad was stronger than in Germany at 2.1 percent. Without passing on the VAT reduction, gross sales in Germany would have increased by around 3.0 percent, Werner said. Dm does not provide any benefit information. The company is in the black and continues to invest, Werner emphasized.
The number of branches in Germany grew from 27 to 2024. In Europe there are a total of 3,765, 97 more than the previous year. The company employs a good 62,600 people, an increase of more than 500 compared to the previous year. The number of employees in Germany fell from just over 200 to 40,436
Werner also announced further growth and more branches for next year. This could lead to transfers. The company is always a tenant with its businesses and can therefore react flexibly.
